June 1st
On this day in 1938 Action Comics #1 is released featuring Superman in print for the first time. Science fiction got a big boost that day and America had a hero for the ages. Let's not forget that Superman was the first big superhero, it opened the door for everything else. X-men, Spiderman, Batman, and all those other guys in tights.
On this day in 1495, Friar John Cor creates the first batch of scotch whiskey. I thinks it funny that its the clergy who make all the advances in alcohol. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if it wasn't a priest who first combined vodka and red bull.
CNN launched on this day in 1980. Ted Turner had a bunch of money to blow, and saw that cable television was the wave of the future. The unintended consequence was the 24 hour news cycle, which shouldn't be underestimated. News around the worlds now available in seconds instead of days. Things can be scrutinized, broken down, analyzed, and 30 minutes later do it all again.
On this day in 1967 the Beatles released their landmark album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Despite Paul being dead, the remaining Beatles released a groundbreaking album that raised the bar for rock and roll. Songs about meter maids, losing ones mind, a circus poster, and LSD created a tapestry that still influences young musicians today.
